Broken belt - broken car. It's that simple.
Your Mirage drive belt does a lot of things under the hood while you are driving. Perhaps most importantly it operates your alternator. While you drive, your Mirage alternator is constantly recharging your battery. The battery then ignites the spark plugs and allows your engine to operate. But if your drive belt breaks, your alternator cannot charge your battery and your battery cannot ignite your spark plugs. Tip: if you belt should break, you can drive a short distance on the power reserve in your battery. It is advisable to drive directly to a service facility if this occurs.
Another important component that your belt drives is the air conditioning compressor. The compressor is an essential part of your a/c system. If your compressor is not operating, you get no cool air at all.
Your drive belt also operates your power steering pump. Should the belt break, you will have a much more difficult time steering your Mirage.
Most car repair manuals suggest you examine your drive belt every 12 months or 15,000 miles, whichever comes first. Examine your Mitsubishi Mirage belt for these wear indicators: fraying, streaks on the sidewall (this also could mean it is not adjusted properly), breaks, cracks, tears, separation of the belt's "piles," glazing (shiny areas anywhere on the belt), and oil soaking. Oil-soaking means there is an oil leak somewhere. Check the engine, transmission, and power steering pump. Find any leaks and stop them.
Should you notice any of these conditions, have your belt replaced soon.
