This Mitsubishi Mirage was built from 1978 through 2002. There were many different versions of this vehicle for the many different markets around the world.
Nineteen seventy-eight was a long time ago. That means that these cars, and probably many cars from the 80's and 90's, have many miles on them. Many miles could indicate it is time for a new engine.
You could perhaps find a few used engines from later model Mirages that will give you years of service. Or you can think about purchasing a "crate" engine. A crate engine, yes, comes in a crate, and is guaranteed to operate properly right out of the crate.
Before rebuilding a Mitsubishi Mirage engine, the technician removes all the engine's plugs and cleans all the components. He or she inspects the oil galleys to make sure that oil will flow to all critical areas when the engine is restarted.
A refurbished Mirage engine has many new parts and has been reworked considerably. A technician has rebored the cylinders up to the next size. He or she replaced the pistons and rings; installed new seals and bearings; reground the camshaft; and installed a new oil pump and timing belt, plus new rocker arms, pushrods, and lifters.
It also includes major cylinder head work, like installing new valve guides and resurfacing the valves. After the head work is complete, the head is pressure and vacuum tested. Finally, the tech cleans the engine again before reassembly and listens for strange noises and checks for oil leaks.
